Neville Ohlson President.

A poor season for catching fish for many but when it comes to the crunch, altho we may be small in numbers, we are big on attitude, as the results of the Champion of Champions competition will confirm.

To put it mildly...we kicked butt. The team consisting of Glen, Neil, Robin and Trevor won the teams event. Glen also won the Supreme Champion, while Neil took out the trophy as the Individual winner. That was the start of the Woolston takeover! More was to come.... With Donna winning the Mitchell Trophy for the Open competition as well as taking out the Ladies Trophy...Woolston were always going to win that anyway taking out the top 4 placings. Then along pops wee Cheyenne who at a very young age, won the Junior section. The only trophies we couldn't win were the 2nd and 3rd trophies in the teams event as its only 1 team per club, and the Intermediate kid's section.. simply because we had no intermediates fishing for us. So on the day it was Woolston 6 ..others 3. Not too bad for a small club but damned effective. As president of this happy go lucky bunch...I was stoked. Enjoy it one and all...you have to defend it next year.

Bowls Woolston

Great complex with 3 grass greens
Bowls Woolston is an amalgamated Club with 80 members. We cater for all Bowlers be it competative or social bowls. We enter Bowls Canterbury and Chartered Clubs Bowling Competitions.

Winter Bowls begin in May with the laying of a special carpet that provides us with four indoor rinks. This is a popular sport as it is always warm and a great game of bowls played with large outdoor bowls.

The ladies have a morning competition that runs over 15 weeks from late April to August. The afternoons are Social and new members are very welcome to come and play or just spectate. We always have time for a cuppa and a biscuit.

The men have a competition on Tuesday evening and most long weekends there will be a tournament running for all players.

Quoits
A Game of Skill, Can you throw a rope ring? Distance required to throw is 33 feet to a pin. This could be the game for you.
The Outdoor Quoits Section was formed in 1957 being one of the first sporting sections of the Woolston Working Men’s Club. The game of Outdoor Quoits originated in the 14th century and was played in the first Greek Olympiad in 1388.
Since then the game has evolved over the years from throwing heavy steel rings onto a clay surface to the current form of rope rings thrown onto a concrete surface. A rope Quoit weighs between 7.5 to 8.5 ounces and is thrown a distance of 33 feet (10.05 metres).

The object of the game is to land your Quoits inside the playing area and end up as close to the pin as possible. Each Quoit closer than your opponents scores a point , the same as Bowls. If a Quoit is thrown over the pin it counts as the shot and scores 3 points, however these are usually regarded as ‘flukes’, good if you manage one though. The art of success is not only throwing the Quoit the required distance but controlling it once it has landed. A Quoit can be thrown to slide straight ahead to the pin or remove an opponents shot or curled around to draw the shot.

The controlling body of Quoits is the Canterbury Quoits Council which administers all interclub competitions including allocation of games and programmes for each season.
The Woolston Quoits section has a proud history of success with interclub competitions and championship trophies. The mainstay of interclub competition has been the Gray Shield, played on a round robin basis. At one stage up to 9 clubs were participating, however numbers have declined over the years leaving only 4 clubs competing although the competition is as keen as ever.

Outdoor Quoits is an enjoyable and entertaining sport that can be played by all ages and skill levels. Our pitches are located outside the sports bar along with Tennis and Petanque.
If you wish to join our section or just come along and try your hand at something different contact Leigh or Marian Pavelka on 980 3673 or you will find Section members in the Sports Bar most Friday nights until about 7pm.
